2022-11
JFA BRINGS OUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ZHANGJIANG CEMENT FACTORY PROJECT IN A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE ARCHITECTURE OF A HISTORIC FACTORY AND THE COMPOSITION OF A NEW DISTRICT ON SEVERAL SCALES. UNITY AND DIVERSITY COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER AS MUCH AS THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN URBAN LIFE AND THE PLACE LEFT TO THE LANDSCAPE.
2022-09
FENGXIAN THEATER WAS BORN IN THE FIELDS, BY THE FARMERS. TODAY, FENGXIAN CITY WANTS TO SHARE THESE SCENES WITH CITIZENS. SYMBOLICALLY, IT IS AS IF THE FIELD SCENES WERE MOVED TO THE HEART OF THE CITY. WE PROPOSE TO EVOKE THIS DISPLACEMENT BY PROPOSING A PROJECT ESTABLISHED IN THE MIDDLE OF A LANDSCAPE WHICH EVOKES THE COUNTRYSIDE AND THE FIELDS. THIS TYPE OF THEATER IS THE WORK OF FARMERS WHO LIVED IN CHARMING LITTLE TRADITIONAL HOUSES SPREAD AROUND RURAL AREAS. THE PROJECT PAYS HOMAGE TO IT. IT EVOKES THESE SMALL HOUSES, GATHERED NEXT BY EACH OTHER AND AROUND THE THEATRE. CONVERSELY, IT IS ALSO AS IF THE THEATER BELONGS TO EACH OF THESE HOUSES. THIS COMPOSITION OF SEVERAL HOUSES RESPONDS AT THE SAME TIME TO THE URBAN CONCEPT: “1000 HOUSINGS”. THIS COMPOSITION IS IN HARMONY WITH THE PROGRAM AND THE SITE. IT GIVES THE PROJECT A VERY HUMAN SCALE, WHICH INVITES ANYONE TO ENTER IT. IT IS NOT REPULSIVE WITH A MONUMENTAL SCALE AND A GLARING AND PRETENTIOUS FORM, BUT IT IS AIMED AT ALL CITIZENS. IT GAINS ITS IMPORTANCE AND VALUE THROUGH ITS HUMILITY.
2021-10
A linear garden through the city —— Xujiahui Footpath phase Ⅱ now under construction The Xujiahui neighbourhood is one of the liveliest in Shanghai; it embodies the dynamism of this megalopolis and reflects its extraordinary urban intensity. The Xujiahui Footpath project designed by JFA, after the completion of the first phase in 2020, has achieved good social benefits. It creates an open, comfortable, and experiential public activity space, and improves the integration of regional business, travel and cultural functions. Now the second phase of the project is steadily advancing, and the scope of the project is from the first phase of the footbridge (the west side of the second phase of the Pacific Digital Plaza) to the Grand Gateway 66. Among them, the North Caoxi Road part is about 59.8 meters long, and the Hongqiao Road part is about 63.2 meters long. The completion of the footbridge not only better organizes pedestrian and vehicular circulation, but also creates new space and potential for urban development. The second phase of the project continues the design concept of the first phase. The footbridge continues to run through the city in terms of space, creating a two-story “linear park”. The two phases will connect Metro City, Pacific Digital, Oriental Commercial Building and The Grand Gateway 66 and other important commercial entities. At the same time, they are organically linked with the green space, becoming a real “green lung” in the center of Shanghai.

Paris,Lisbon and Shanghai-based practices Jacques Ferrier Architecture and SensualCity Studio have turned what could have been an ordinary ‘office plus car park’into an opportunity to radically reassess the surrounding urban district of Xujiahui in Shanghai. The resulting structure, on the site of a former hotel, combines office, civic, commercial and cultural space with green ribbons of public walkways, connecting the streets and buildings of China’s busiest intersection with peaceful arteries from which to escape the tumult. The design explored ways in which the project could become a generous catalyst for the wider environment, building pedestrian connections, walkways and bridges above the transport interchange as anextension of the building; in doing so, renewing the local infrastructure. Throughextensive analysis, Jacques Ferrier, founder of Jacques Ferrier Architecture, and Pauline Marchetti, co-founder of Sensual City Studio, identified the needfor enhanced pedestrian connectivity at the intersection and incorporated this into the building’s car park. The radical intervention creates raised and planted walkways which lift pedestrians sevenmetres above the crossroads to provide more logical and enjoyable connectivity between citylandmarks such as the church and the park. The project includes two levels of commercial space underground, one of which is connected to the Metro City building by an underground gallery. Floors 1 and 2house several hundred square meters of community spaces. Floors 3 to 4house the public car park, which unfolds in the form of a continuous spiral, serving the offices and businesses of the district. The 6th and 7th floors areshared office space arranged around a large raised garden, and house areception for visitors, cafeteria, meeting rooms, auditorium and spaces forrelaxation and conviviality. Levels 8 to 12 have been developed as efficientand user-friendly office floors. The top two floors are home to the culturalcentre, space that seemingly “floats” on the skyline of the district. As a piece of architecture, T20 expresses the movementand dynamism inherent in the site: its circulation and activation through humanuse, across the bridges that connect to the city and at ground and first floorlevel where public facalities and shopts are located. The car park becomes a lush urban oasis for the city, with the insertionof an extraordinary “hanging garden” that is visible from key public spaces.
